One of the most common questions people ask is, “How do I break through plateaus?” Just about everyone who has ever gone on some type of weight reduction plan has hit a plateau at some point in time. I am certainly no different; I hit a number of plateaus in my own journey.
One of the most effective ways to break through a plateau is actually one of the more hokey ways. In fact, as I share this with you, you are probably going to think, “ok, that’s crazy!” But it has worked every time for me, and it’s worked for all of my clients that I’ve taught this too. Before you discount it as something just ridiculously crazy, just give it a try.
What you do if you hit a plateau with your weight, business goals, or even muscle gains, is you write a letter to your body. Yes, you read that correctly. You grab a piece of paper, and you just start writing. You then write something like, “Dear body, what is going on? Why have we hit this plateau? What is it that you need?” and you just keep writing down whatever comes to your mind intuitively. You say things like, “What is it you need in order to break through this plateau? Love, _______ (your name).”
You take a quick break, you come back, and you put your pen to paper and write, “Dear ______ (your name), this is your body…” and then you simply write whatever comes to your mind. Now, if you’ve never done this before, this is going to seem really, really hokey, and you might be really tempted to discount this, and you’re going to try to think, “wait a second, that doesn’t make sense, that isn’t logical.” Avoid that temptation, OK? Just write down whatever comes to you, even if it doesn’t seem to make any logical sense because it probably won’t, yet.
Here’s the deal, your subconscious mind knows exactly what you need in order to reach your ideal weight the fastest, safest, most enjoyable way possible. This is an exercise that simply allows you to tap into your subconscious mind and get those answers.
You may be surprised at what comes up. Maybe you won’t be, maybe you’ll be like, “Oh, I knew I should’ve changed that before. OK, that’s what I need to do now.” Again, write down whatever comes to you.
I’ve shared my story about one of my biggest plateaus ever which was at 215lbs. I was hitting up against 215 lbs for like a week and a half, and I was doing everything “right,” I was hitting all my Macros, my calories, my workouts and everything, and just for whatever reason, my weight did not want to get under 215 pounds… until, I wrote myself a letter.
That’s when in my “response” back to me it said, “Dear Eric, do you remember the last time we were under 215 lbs? We were homeless. We are really, really scared about losing everything if we get under 215 lbs again. We need to break through this fear, and then we can break through the plateau.” The message hit me, and I went, “Oh, OK.” This fear is what kept me at that plateau. Subconsciously I feared that if I dropped under that weight again, I would lose everything.
I did an exercise that I’ll share with you in another post, and I very quickly released that fear and the next day – Boom – plateau broken.
I was under 215 lbs and I’ve never looked back again since. And I’ve done this over and over again, and I’ve recommended this really simple, hokey tool to all my clients, and almost every one of them report back that the very next day their plateau is gone, as long as they implement what their body says that they need.
I know, it’s hokey, and if you’ve never done this before you’re gonna feel really silly doing this and say, “Seriously Eric, I’m writing a letter to my body?” My answer is (head nod) “Uh-huh, absolutely.” You can even write letters to individual body parts like, “Dear belly, why aren’t you shrinking faster? We need to talk. What’s the deal here?”
You can even do this if you have aches and pains that aren’t going away. I recently had one of my clients do this with one of her shoulders, and she wrote, “Dear shoulder, how come you have been hurting so much?” I can’t remember exactly the response that she got back, but it made a huge difference for her, and her pain went away very quickly because she found from her subconscious mind exactly what she was needing.
One more time, you can write a letter to yourself even if you haven’t hit a plateau. You write a letter to your body or specific body parts, saying “Dear Body (or belly, or whatever part you need to speak to), we need to talk. What is it that you need?” Write down whatever comes to your mind, take a break, and then come back and write a letter back to yourself.
Again, don’t think about it, don’t discount whatever comes to your mind, don’t try to think if it’s logical or not, just write down whatever comes to you. Then most importantly, implement what it is that comes to you, and watch how quickly you break through that plateau.
